Hello, fellow animal lovers, and welcome to the Bonnyville and District SPCA’s Blog!
In this blog, we’ll answer some of those burning questions about the rescue industry, why we believe in the cause and share the heartwarming success stories that inspire us every day. Get ready to dive into the world of animal welfare, where every wag of a tail and every purr of contentment reminds us why we’re passionate about making a difference.
The Bonnyville and District SPCA was created to help abandoned, lost, and abused animals find their forever homes after some well-deserved TLC while in our care. We strive to promote responsible pet ownership and are committed to making a difference.
What We Do:
At our shelter, we offer a temporary home to lost, unwanted, abused, orphaned, and surrendered cats and dogs from Bonnyville and the surrounding area.
Every animal entrusted to us is vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before they are sent to their forever home.
We are committed to fostering a culture of empathy and understanding towards animals in the Bonnyville and surrounding area which is why we offer school tours. These tours provide youth with an opportunity to learn about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Additionally, we provide work experience opportunities to high school students, welcoming the future generation of animal caretakers.
In collaboration with our community, we extend our services to aid in reuniting lost pets with their families. Through our active presence on social media platforms like Facebook, we facilitate lost and found pet services by sharing lost or found pet posts on our page.
All of this wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community. Help us help them by actively engaging on our blog posts as they go live and spread the word about what we do!
In this blog post, we’ll dive into responsible pet ownership and why you should spay or neuter your pet.
As the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Alberta SPCA) states, spaying, for females, or neutering, for males, provides multiple benefits for your animal, your community and your wallet!
Animal benefits: Getting your pet spayed or neutered can keep them healthier by reducing the risk of life-threatening diseases like cancer. According to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, spaying before females reach reproductive maturity reduces the risk of tumours in their mammary glands and prevents issues and diseases in their uterus or ovaries. For male pets, neutering before they can reproduce lowers their chance of hormone-related diseases, makes surgeries easier, and helps them heal faster. Plus, it can calm down behaviors in both female and male animals like wandering, marking territory, and feeling anxious.
Community benefits: With animal shelters in Alberta reaching record capacity, responsible pet ownership is more crucial than ever. Getting your pet spayed or neutered ensures you’re not adding to the province’s pet overpopulation issue. Preventing unplanned breeding is key to managing this problem and is a fundamental aspect of responsible pet ownership.
Wallet benefits: Spayed or neutered pets are unable to reproduce, saving you from the expenses of caring for a litter of animals, including food and medical costs.
Be a responsible pet owner and support community organizations like the Bonnyville SPCA in addressing animal overpopulation in Alberta. Every animal deserves a loving home, but it takes effort from everyone to make a difference.
